Arthdal Chronicles Season 1 Episode 9: A Review

Arthdal Chronicles is a Korean drama series that tells the story of a mythical land called Arth, where different tribes and races vie for power and survival. The series follows three main characters: Eunseom, a half-human half-Neanthal who has a fate to bring disaster to Arth; Tanya, a Wahan tribe leader who has a fate to become a great priestess; and Tagon, a war hero who has a fate to become the first king of Arth.

In episode 9, titled "The Children of Prophecy (3)", we see how these characters face their fates and challenges in different ways. Tanya forms an alliance with Saya, Tagon's twin brother who has been locked up in a secret chamber. Eunseom suffers at the hands of Syoreujagin, a cruel slave trader who wants to sell him as an Igutu. Tagon confronts Mubaek, his loyal friend who betrayed him to Asa Ron, the leader of the Asa clan. The episode ends with a shocking revelation that Tanya may be the descendant of Asa Sin, the founder of Arth.

Summary of Episode 9

Tanya's alliance with Saya

Tanya decides to choose Saya as her closest stone, her first weapon to fight her oppressors. She kneels in front of Saya and begs for his forgiveness. She calls him "owner" and offers to spy on his behalf. She tells him that she knows what he wants and fears: freedom and confinement. She also reveals that Taealha, Tagon's lover, ordered her to spy on Saya.

Saya is surprised by Tanya's sudden change of heart. He warns her that Taealha could kill her for this, but Tanya is confident that she won't die. She says, "I'm not Saenarae." Saenarae was Saya's childhood friend who died trying to escape with him. Saya's smile drops when he hears this name. He remembers Eunseom, his twin brother who looks exactly like him. He tells Tanya not to look at him with her pleading eyes. He says, "You don't know anything about me."

Tanya agrees that she doesn't know him, but she says that she can learn from him. She asks him to teach her how to read and write. She says that she wants to know the secrets of Arth and the history of the Arthdal Union. She says that she can help him escape from his prison and find his brother. She says, "I can be your weapon, your friend, and your family."

Saya is intrigued by Tanya's offer. He agrees to teach her and share his knowledge with her. He also tells her his real name: Eunsom. He says, "That's the name my mother gave me." He says that he hates his name Saya, which means "bird" in Arthdal language. He says, "I'm not a bird. I'm a human."

Eunseom's ordeal with the slave traders

Eunseom is captured by Syoreujagin and his men, who are slave traders from Ago tribe. They torture and humiliate him, trying to make him admit that he is an Igutu, a half-human half-Neanthal hybrid. They cut his hair, burn his skin, and break his bones. They mock him for being a coward and a liar.

Eunseom refuses to give in to their demands. He says that he is not an Igutu, but a Wahan. He says that he is proud of his tribe and his people. He says that he will never betray them or himself. He says, "I'm Eunseom of Wahan. I'm the son of Ragazeu and Nunbyeol."

Teodae, a young boy who was also captured by the slave traders, admires Eunseom's courage and loyalty. He tries to help Eunseom by giving him water and medicine. He tells Eunseom that he is from Momo tribe, a peaceful tribe that lives in harmony with nature. He says that he was kidnapped by Syoreujagin when he was hunting with his father.

Teodae also tells Eunseom that Syoreujagin plans to sell him as an Igutu to the highest bidder in Doldambul market. He says that Igutus are rare and valuable commodities in Arthdal, because they have special abilities and bloodlines. He says that many people want to own them, use them, or kill them.

Eunseom realizes that he is in grave danger. He decides to escape from the slave traders with Teodae's help. However, their plan is foiled by Syoreujagin, who catches them in the act. Syoreujagin decides to punish them by throwing them into a pit full of hungry wolves.

Teodae sacrifices himself for Eunseom by jumping into the pit first and distracting the wolves. He tells Eunseom to run away and find his brother Saya. He says, "You're not alone. You have a brother who looks like you." He dies bravely, smiling at Eunseom.

Tagon's confrontation with Mubaek and Asa Ron

Tagon is invited by Asa Ron to participate in a ritual to honor the gods of Arthdal. Asa Ron is the leader of the Asa clan, the most powerful clan in Arthdal Union. He is also the high priest of Aramun Haesulla, the supreme god of Arth.

Tagon accepts the invitation, thinking that it is a sign of respect and friendship from Asa Ron. However, he is unaware that Asa Ron has a hidden agenda: to expose Tagon as an Igutu and overthrow him as the leader of Arthdal Union.

Taealha, Tagon's lover and ally, senses something wrong with Asa Ron's invitation. She warns Tagon not to trust Asa Ron or anyone from the Asa clan. She tells him that Asa Ron is plotting against him and wants to kill him.

Tagon dismisses Taealha's warning as paranoia and jealousy. He tells her that he knows how to deal with Asa Ron and his followers. He tells her that he has a secret weapon: Mubaek.

Mubaek is Tagon's friend and subordinate from Daekan Force, the elite army of Arthdal Union. Mubaek has been spying on Asa Ron for Tagon, trying to find out his plans and motives.

However, Mubaek has also been spying on Tagon for Asa Ron, trying to find out his true identity and bloodline.Mubaek has been conflicted about his loyalty and duty. He respects and admires Tagon as a leader and a warrior, but he also fears and hates him as an Igutu. He believes in Asa Ron as a priest and a guardian of Arth, but he also doubts and questions him as a politician and a schemer.

Mubaek is caught by Tagon when he tries to sneak into his chamber. Tagon accuses him of betrayal and treason. He ties him up and interrogates him. He asks him why he betrayed him and what he knows about him.

Mubaek tells Tagon that he knows that he is an Igutu, that he killed his father Sanung, that he lied to the people of Arthdal, and that he has a twin brother named Saya. He also tells Tagon that Asa Ron knows all these things too, and that he plans to reveal them during the ritual.

Tagon is shocked and angry by Mubaek's confession. He asks him how Asa Ron found out about his secrets. Mubaek tells him that Asa Ron has a spy in Tagon's inner circle: Tanya.

Tagon is stunned and incredulous by this revelation. He asks Mubaek how Tanya is related to Asa Ron. Mubaek tells him that Tanya is the descendant of Asa Sin, the founder of Arth and the ancestor of the Asa clan.
